before whatever we’ve got is gone

I auditioned to be a dancer at the Lucky Horseshoe Lounge in Boystown. Making $600 my first night I realized how much handsomer the rewards are for flirtations in a big city like Chicago. At first, I used grindr or scruff to try making friends; but, the other dancers became my companions, and finally I was spending most weekends having dinners with the Johns. I started to feel the dread of a person whose livelihood is dependent upon his ability to turn heads, who drinks every night to get along more easily with strangers, who is as old as the youngest customer paying to touch the boys in a darkened corner of the bar.
